The “Yo, professor, what’s up?!” sample comes from an awesome Main Source song, “Fakin’ the Funk.” “Fakin’ the Funk” was almost the first song of this mix, because I wanted it to lead into the “Intro,” but I cut it due to time. Large Professor is one of my favorite rappers and producers. Large Professor - Intro - The LP (1996/2009) What follows are rather brief explanations of the inclusion of every song. I promise I wasn’t trying to yell at any of you.Īlso, a friend, Chanda, convinced me that I should stick with “mixtape” to describe the physical material, instead of “mix CD.” And please don’t judge my use of a shitty mic. But that was also feature of old mixtapes, so I guess I am consistent. I must admit - this mixtape gets pretty sloppy and lo-fi at times, some songs are louder than others. So, if you’re listening, or received a tape/CD, then it is because you requested one, and/or you have been there for me during this tough year, or really, last two years. I crafted a mix you can listen to when you’re feeling good, when you’re struggling, and when you feel like you’re just surviving, much like myself at certain times this year. The goal of this mixtape is to bring some joy. ![]() But, again, with only working with 80 minute CDs (instead of 90 minute Maxell tapes!), there were many, many songs that I used to listen to on repeat while in high school that I left off, regrettably. As a veteran mixtape maker, I start with a more intellectual approach to curation, then I change the track list as I pay more attention to tempo, content, and the memories and feelings that songs evoke. I told someone that the mix comprised mostly of rap from the 1990s, but that is not the case after looking at the playlist. It was quite difficult selecting songs because I considered so many, and, of course, left many of them off the mixtape. I listened to multiple playlists and even hit up an old friend who I gave a mixtape to back in high school for inspiration. I tried my best to choose personally meaningful tracks. Last week, I posted a question on social media asking if anyone would like a mixtape with some of my favorite hip hop songs as a “holiday card.” I received a resounding “YES,” so here it is. *Inspired by Angie McCoy (RIP) and family, friends, and you. *Songs arranged and mixed adequately by Austin McCoy ![]() “Fuck the Oligopolists,” a/k/a “Getting the Oligarchy,” a/k/a the Holiday Card Mixtape, Volume 1?
